RANGOON, Burma (AP) -- Sentry posts outside the house of detained
pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi were removed Saturday, eyewitnesses
said, amid increasing speculation over the Nobel Peace laureate's fate.
Suu Kyi, who won the peace prize in 1991, has been under house arrest
for 41/2 years. Burmese authorities can detain anyone for five years without
trialunder a law intended "to protect the state from dangers of subversive
elements."
Despite the unexplained removal of five sentry posts outside the
lakesidehouse near Rangoon University, road barricades remained and soldiers
werevisible nearby. The ruling military junta has kept the two-story brick
houseunder round-the-clock guard since her detention on July 20, 1989. Suu
Kyi won a landslide victory in 1990 elections to lead her nation. But theparty
was not allowed to assume power.
She is married to a British citizen, Michael Aris, and spent most of her
lifeabroad after the 1947 assassination of her father, Gen. Aung San, leader
of Burma's independence moveent. She returned to live in Burma in 1988.
Aris visited her twice last year.
Asked by journalists Friday whether she will be detained beyond five years,
Attorney General U Tha Tun said there are other laws enabling continued
housearrest. The military government has said it is willing to release her
if she goes into exile, a condition she has rejected.
