Subject : Canada Calls for Release of Burmese Political Prisoner

OTTAWA (Reuter) - Canada Wednesday urged Burma to release
Nobel Peace prize winner and dissident leader Aung San Suu Kyi,
imprisoned for the past five years by the military junta.
"Canada calls upon the government of Burma to release the
Nobel Peace prize winner and all other political prisoners,"
Raymond Chan, a top Canadian foreign affairs ministry official,
said in a statement.
"This remarkable woman's sole offense has been to promote
democracy and human rights in her country by peaceful means,"
said Chan, the ministry's secretary of state for Asia and the
Pacific.
The Burmese junta detained Aung San Suu Kyi on July 20, 1989
for "attempting to endanger the state."
Her arrest prevented her from campaigning in the 1990
election in Burma.
