Update on Holackani

The refugees at Holockani are still sitting in a makeshift camp on the Thai
side of the border. Conditions are bad but not insufferable, according to
several observers. They've been given a deadline by Thai authorities of 10
or 11 August to move back to the camp on the Burma side of the border. Mon
National Relief Committee officials are stronly resisting the move but Thai
officials say that when the deadline passes, they intend to cut off supplies
to anyone not in the original camp.

The motive for the attack on Holockani was apparantly, revenge. Two Burmese
soldiers from the 61st Battalion entered the camp during the week prior and
harassed a female Mon refugee. Her husband attempted to protect her and they
shot him (in the leg). Other Mons in the camp then attacked the two Burmese
soldiers and killed them. This incident led to a revenge attack ordered by
the commander of 61 Battalion. The commander of the Battalion that rotated
in after 61 Battalion's departure last week is reportedly upset with his
predecessor's actions and has promised not to attack Holockani.
