myanmar to be paid in fe for fe earnings

BODY: the myanmar ministry of finance and
revenues wednesday issued three notifications
requiring the cooperative sector, the private
sector and citizens to pay tax and revenues to
the state in foreign exchange (fe) for their
earnings in fe. notification no 145/94 of the
ministry states that the cooperative sector and
the private sector are to pay commercial tax in fe
if they earn fe in their sales or services.
notification no 146/94 prescribes that myanmar
citizens resident either in the union of myanmar
or abroad are to pay 10 per cent of their
earnings in fe as income tax. the notification
further says that the same rate of income tax
will be collected from foreigners employed in the
union of myanmar. both notifications will take
effect on december 1, 1994.

HEADLINE: u.s. company explores oil and gas in

chairman of santa fe energy resources (southeast
asia) of america mr. duane radtke held
discussions with myanmar energy authorities on
inland oil and natural gas exploration and
production, according to an official report
today. the united states company will drill test
wells in kyaukkwet region of pakokku township in
magway division of central myanmar, the report
disclosed. american companies have invested more
than 200 million in myanmar, most of those in oil
and natural gas exploration and production
businesses.

an eight-member chinese delegation led by wan
guoquan, vice-chairman of the national committee
of the chinese people's political consultative
conference (cppcc), arrived here this afternoon
for an eight-day goodwill visit to myanmar. wan
is also vice-president of the chinese association
for international understanding. the delegation
was greeted at yangon airport by myanmar minister
for foreign affairs u ohn gyaw, deputy foreign
minister u nyunt swe and chinese ambassador to
myanmar chen baoliu. the delegation will have
round-table discussions with myanmar institute of
strategic and information studies.

extends immunization to townships DATELINE:

immunization has been extended to 301 townships
covering 95 percent of myanmar townships, the
official newspapers reported today. at a two-day
workshop on immunization here on tuesday, myanmar
minister for health vice-admiral than nyunt said
that the drive has already covered 90 percent of
the targeted population. the immunization project
will be extended to the remaining 17 townships in
1995, the minister added. the japan-aided project
was first introduced in 1978 and carried out in
176 townships afterwards.

HEADLINE: Myanmar army chief of staff calls on Dr
Lee BODY: THE Chief of Staff of the
Myanmar Army, Lieutenant-General Tin Oo, calling
on Dr Lee Boon Yang (right), the Defence and
Labour Minister, yesterday morning. Lt-Gen
Tin, who is on a goodwill visit to Singapore, is
accompanied by a 16-member delegation.
During the meeting at the Defence Ministry in
Gombak Drive, Lt-Gen Tin and Dr Lee discussed
bilateral and regional issues. The ministry
said in a statement yesterday: "Singapore's
relations with Myanmar are conducted within the
Asean framework of constructive engagement."
Later, Rear-Admiral (NS) Teo Chee Hean, the
Minister of State for Defence and Finance, hosted
a lunch for Lt-Gen Tin, who also toured some SAF
facilities. Last night, the general attended
a dinner with the Acting Chief of Defence Force,
Rear-Admiral Kwek Siew Jin. He leaves
Singapore tomorrow.
