SLORC offensive

           23 January 1995

Hi Folks,

The enemy has now reached positions where it can shell Marnerplaw.
The situation is really tense now. Right now our troops are facing at
least 30 battalions of the SLORC army. The 331, 332, 333, 442, 443, 661,
662, 663 tactical commands with 3 battalions each are in the vicinity of
Marnerplaw-Mae Ta Wa. The 1st and 2nd artillery battalions also have
units supporting the whole offensive. The 22nd division has overrun an
outpost on the Kolowalu hill about 20 kilometers from Manerplaw with an
extra 2 battalions.

On the Dagwin front, 4 battalions are poised to
attack down the Salween river. Today 200 troops attacked the hill west of
Manerplaw and another attack was launched on a hill closer to Htoo Wah Lu
called the Sinbyu Taung or White Elephant H ill. We lost the Sinbyu hill
which means all areas are within shelling distance. On the Wanka front
the 77th division is reinforcing 441 Tactical Command and SE commands 355,
356, 357 battalions. Htoo Wah Lu has been shelled and evacuated.
Communicati on routes to Thaw Leh Hta or Mae Sam Laep is now cut off. Ker
Thay Lu is still open but for how long we don't know.

 Steve.

********
my analysis (from someone who has never held let alone fired a gun)

The key news here is that SLORC has crossed the Salween. This was the last
line of defense for Manerplaw. Shelling of Manerplaw has not happened as
of yet. Because communications are cut off between Dawgwin and Manerplaw,
SLORC does not have to overrun Manerplaw. They can now starve the democratic
forces out.
