DawnGwin still holds (r)

I devour the news of the people and places I visited last summer. It has
become personal with me (and I try to make it personal with others).
Thanks for passing the letters along to the world at large.

I'm sitting in a wheel chair these days. Trying to get myself in shape for
the summer, I nearly destroyed the muscles in my left leg, and have to stay
off it for a while. Nothing permanent, just lots of temporary frustration.

I've heard nothing from my dental leads since I came jhome. I've written
all of them, but silence in return. I'll start to nudge after TESOL's over
(da boss has got me helping her with organization).

I have a new doctor friend, met him on the internet. He's a new graduate,
very keen to do some good (before he starts doing well?) and I had him all
talked into going to Dr. C's to do a short (six-week) volunteer stint.
He's a little spooked by all the activity over there, and wonders if he
should go now. Read on, quoted without permission:

"I do wonder, however, how recent events affect my going to volunteer. I
figure either I can be even more help, or that with an influx of refugees I
might be an even greater bother. I called the clinic a few nights ago, but
Dr C was not there and I was unable to get someone on the phone who spoke
english well enough to explain the situation. They did tell me that Dr. C
would be back on 8 Feb, and I plan on calling back then.

"In case I can't get through, do you really think it's ok to just show up
an volunteer to work? Won't they want any kind of proof that I am who I say
i am? What should i bring, in terms of papers and perhaps supplies I can
gather from here? Would they really have a spot on the floor somewhere
where I can lay down my sleeping bag?"

What would you advise this young doctor? I'm frankly scared to make a
recommendation ("Go, dammit!") because of my purely superficial familiarity
with the situation. Help us?

Good luck with all the demos planned in Japan for SLORC's ministers there.
In my dreams I'm there in chains with the rest of you.

As ever was,
Stay tuned,
Cam
