News! News! News!

U Aung is back. Is he asking students to go back to Burma?????

U Aung (Chairman of Da Nya Ta), son of ex-premier U Nu has just got back from
Rangoon. He has been arranging informal meetings with exile students in
Bangkok. According to unconfirmed student news sources, students feel that U
Aung is encouraging them to go back to Burma. However, he did not ask the
students directly to go back to Burma, but ask them to participate in the
national reconciliation process.

A new detention center for Burmese students.

There is a rumor spreading among Burmese students in Bangkok that Thai
government is planning to confine the Burmese students in Thailand at an old
refugee camp, located near Thai-Loas border. The camp, which held Loatians
refugees, has a capacity to hold up to 3,000 people. Students are not sure if
the news is part of a psychological warfare on students or if it is for real.

Ethnic groups and ABSDF under Thai's pressure.

According to border news sources, ABSDF and ethnic groups( Mon, Karen and
Karenii) have been under heavy pressure from the Thai government, to engage
in informal talks with Slorc. Food, medical supplies and contact with
foreigners (journalist and NGO workers) have been either cut off, restricted
or closely scrutinized by the Thai government. In the past, the talk between
Mon and Slorc has not brought a resolution due to Slorc's unilateral demands.
However, under Thai's renewed and intense pressure, it is not sure how long
the opposition groups will stand against that pressure. It is possible that
one of those group may have to give in. The Thai government is pushing to get
a satisfiable decision for them before the beginning of the rainy season.
