FORCED RELOCATION IN LOIKAW

Loikaw, the capital of Kayah State, Township Law and
Order Restoration Council, on February 23, 1995, ordered
the people who lived in the main street, in front of the
station, to rebuild concrete buildings urgently. Due to lack
of money, the common people who could not afford to
carry it out, had to move to a new area, selling their houses
at extremely low prices. That was attributed to the
SLORC's programme with an aim to entice the foreign
tourists, for the coming Tourist Burma Year. The SLORC
would like to persuade the global community that the
economic and political situation in Burma has become
developed and peaceful. As a result, similar events are
occurring throughout the country.

PEOPLE FORCED TO BUILD HOUSES FOR MON
REBELS WHO SURRENDERED TO SLORC

On September 2, 1994, 28 members of the New Mon State
Party led by Naing Tala Ban, commander in the south of
Yae military zone, in Tennasserium divison, laid down their
arms to No. (343) Light Regiment of the SLORC. Yae
Township Law and Order Restoration Council on
September 22, 1994, ordered the people from 37 quarters
and villages to immediately build 28 houses at their own
expense for the surrendered Mon group. Each house must
be wooden; it must have a concrete foundation and a zinc
roof. The cost of each house is 119,500 Kyats. AS a result,
the people from the villages mentioned had to build 28
houses and they had to spend 3,346,000 Kyats due to the
unavoidable order of the SLORC.
