ABSDF Statement on the Fifth-Anniversary of the General Election

                                             Date: May 27, 1995

Recalling the military regime's total denial of the results of
the general election on May 27, 1990 in which National League for
Democracy led by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi had won over 80% of
the parliamentary seats overwhelmingly,

Recalling also the arbitrary arrest of the elected
representatives of the 1990 general election, political
opposition leaders, students, and severe human rights abuses
which include torture to death, forced labor, force relocation of
innocent civilians etc..., and intensifying military offensive
against Manerplaw, headquarters of the KNU and pro-democracy
organizations, which even endangers the regional stability on the
eastern border of the country,

Denouncing the continuation of the sham National Convention
dominated by the SLORC hand-picked delegates,

Having deliberated upon the democratization, restoration of
genuine peace and national reconciliation in Burma,

The ABSDF strongly demands the SLORC:

To revoke all repressive measures and to protect human rights
To unconditionally release all political prisoners including Daw
Aung san Suu Kyi, Nobel peace prize winner of 1991
To abolish the SLORC's National Convention immediately
To transfer power to the duly elected people's representatives

Urges the Burmese Army officials and grassroots soldiers to go
back to their barracks and to restore the dignity of the Army
that had existed once under the leadership of General Aung San.

Urges the entire democracy-loving people inside and outside of
Burma to continue their great struggle for the restoration of
Democracy and human rights in Burma.

Also Urges the entire nation and democracy-loving people all over
the world not to fall prey the SLORC's delaying tactics to take
time for creating a puppet government through its own process of
so called national convention.

Earnestly appeal to the United Nations and international
community to intensify the pressure against the Slorc which
ignored the general election results, and also to abandon the
constructive engagement policy which only enhances the SLORC and
not the democratic movements.
