Statement of NCUB (r)

National Council of the Union of Burma Statement on the Release of Daw
Aung San Suu Kyi
 (1) The National Council of the Union of Burma cordially
welcomes the release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi by SLORC.
 (2) The National
Council of the Union of Burma attributes Daw Aung San Suu Kyis release to
the following factors: - fear of possible mounting up internal struggle
by the mass within Burma. - increasing international pressures coupled
with economic sanctions. - anti-military dictatorship struggles by the
democratic forces both within and without. Given above factors, SLORC,
had no other alternative but to release her. Despite the fact that Daw
Aung San Suu Kyi has been released, democracy has not yet been achieved.
Hence, all will have to continue struggling without let-down to attain it.
(3) SLORC had promised to transfer power after the May 1990 election.
Nevertheless, it reneged on its promise and clings on to power. It broke
its unilateral cease-fire with the Karens and attacked and occupied
Marnaplaw in January, 1995. It has also broken the three-month old
cease-fire reached with Karenni National Progressive Party and is
currently launching a military offensive against the KNPP. Since SLORC has
a long history of broken promises, it , under various pretexts, can have
Daw Aung San Suu Kyi re-arrested. Hence, SLORCs upcoming activities will
have to be watched with caution. (4) Daw Aung San Suu Kyi had been kept
incommunicado, and her release is a mere lifting of the restriction
imposed on her against communication without outside. As a result, her
release does not guarantee that it is on the right track towards achieving
democratization process. SLORC needs to revoke its unjust laws and
recognize the basic rights of all citizens. Only then, will she be able
to exercise her rights as a citizen and can freely work for the
advancement of democracy.
(5) Although Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has gained
her release, National Council of the Union of Burma deems it highly
necessary for the people of Burma to go on with their mass struggle, and
the international community continue with their pressure on SLORC military
dictatorship. NCUB earnestly urges both the great mass within Burma and
the international community to continue the struggle and not to let the
momentum down.
(6) Should SLORC really desire national reconciliation and
wish to implement democratic reforms, it should, for the sake and
well-being of the people,
	- release all political prisoners
	- cancel all unjust laws and orders
	- hold a substantial political dialogue involving democratic forces
led by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, ethnic nationalities and SLORC in order to
solve the political problems of Burma through political means, so as to
implement the wish of the people- formation of a democratic government-
which they had expressed in the May 1990 election.
