FBD's STATEMENT ON RELEASE OF AUNG

FDB STATEMENT ON RELEASE OF AUNG SAN SUU KYI
The Foundation for Democracy in Burma (FDB) wholeheartedly
welcomes the release of Nobel Peace Laureate and pro-democracy
leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi from her almost six years of house-arrest
in Rangoon, Burma. However, this is only a good first step towards
returning Burma to normalcy and decency.
The FDB also welocomes the fact that her release is stated to
be "unconditional", and hopes that this will enable her to participate
fully and freely in a process of national reconciliation, which will
lead to the fulfillment of the wishes of its people and the installation
of the democratically elected government.
The FDB also looks forward to the immediate release of all
political prisoners; the begining of a rapid process to fully restore
and respect the fundamental human rights of its citizens, including the
immediate stopping of the use of forced labor, the forced relocation
of whole populations and the brutalization of its minority and ethnic
peoples.
