Nichimen of Japan to Cooperate SLORC in Agriculture

Released by ISBDA on October 27, 1995.

Japanese big trading house Nichimen announced that it will start venture
business with the military government in Burma in agricultural sector,
Business and Technology newspaper Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun reported today. The
companyÕs policy is reportedly based on the assumption that since Myanmar is
a agriculturally profound country of Asia, it will seek a place in Asian
market for Myanmarese agricultural products.

NichimenÕs president Mr. Akira Watari and his group are planning to see SLOR
C leaders in November. Although the details prepared for the closed-door
meeting are not available, it is expected to make agreements for trade and
investment in Burma.
The report added that Burma has been a popular country among the Japanese
trading houses for business profit.

Japanese giants such as Marubeni, Mitsui & Co, Mitsubishi Shoji, Nissho
Iwai and Sumitomo Shoji have recently signed agreements to work with the
military government in Burma. All these conducts followed after Japanese
governmentÕs encouragement in February to do business with SLORC by issuing
insurance policies for Japan money to be invested in Burma.

It is important to note here that the Japanese business watchdog body has
decided this week to punish all these trading houses to return a total of
1.6 million dollars as fine to the government because misconduct
practiced by these companies in sharing Japanese ODA funds was partly
exposed.
