HEINEKEN out of Burma campaign

AMSTERDAM - "Heineken beer should pull out of Burma." That is the goal of a
campaign that was started last sunday in Amsterdam by X-Y and A Seed.
Heineken is building a brewery just outside of Rangoon. The campaign has
been picked-up by most if noyt all media in The Netherlands.

According to the organisations, Heineken is supporting the Burmese militairy
junta, which is one of the most repressive regimes in the world. Their
appeal to Heineken is supported by the socialists in the government that
wants to know whether the Heineken brewery is being built with the use of
forced labour. The socialists will also push for a Ducth ban on investments
in Burma.

Heineken does not deny that the situation in Burma is very bad. But the
company feels it can improve the situation by co-operation with the military
junta.
The brewery is built in a joint-venture with APB, a joint venture of Asian
Business partner Asia Pacific Breweries ltd and and UMEHL, a holding company
of the military.
