S. H.A.N : ANXIETY STRIKES HO MURNG

S.H.A.N : ANXIETY STRIKES HO MURNG
26 March, 1996

After Khun Sa left Ho Murng on March 8, 1996, his second son Zao Zarm Hurng ( in
charge of logistics ) followed him on March 14, 1996, saying he would be back
after about a fortnight.

Prior to his departure, and after his father had left, Zao Zarm Hurng explained
about the situation to his close aides. He said there were four options for the
SLORC concerning his father after he had been forcibly summoned to Rangoon :
1) SLORC may hand him over to the USA ( since the SLORC is known not to be
trustworthy .
2) They could inject him with secret poison that would shorten his life, under
the guise of health care
( even though he had brought his own medic Sai Mint with him ).
3) They could detain him for a long time, using various pretexts (they might
even give him life imprisonment ).
4) They could let him come back to Ho Murng if he is fortunate enough. And this
is the last hope.
( It is said that just before he boarded the helicopter to leave Ho Murng,
he was searched by SLORC soldiers and he was so frustrated that he shed
tears afterwards. )

After they had heard this, many people in Ho Murng became anxious about their
future.

Some said they would stay on for two-three months to see how things turned
out.If things became worse, they would have to find ways to leave.

Sao Khwan Murng, ex-secretary of the CEC/SSRC, sold his Toyota Hilux pick-up
truck, which Khun Sa gave him in1992, for 10,000 Baht and his pistol for 12,000
Baht, and left Ho Murng on March 6,1996.

Prior to Khun Sa's departure, he sent Sao Khwan Murng a package, about 8 inches
thick ( containing Burmese currency notes ) and some words which said " You can
go home if you want to. If you want to contact him ( Khun Sa ), don't go to
Rangoon, go to Khun Kham Leng's house ( the Shan name of Khun Seng's brother,
Khun Sa's uncle ) in Taunggyi ". Realising that Khun Sa was buying him off, he
left within 2-3 days via the motor road.

No other officials received money like this from Khun sa, except for the
original members of his SUA. Most have been abandoned with nothing in hand, as
if to say " As I have failed, no one will succeed me and inherit my properties.
