ASIA: HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION LASHES OUT AT BURMA
BURMA UN
GENEVA, April 24 AFP - The United Nations Human Rights
Commission adopted a resolution on Burma today that read like a
catalogue of human rights abuses.
The text, sponsored by 36 countries and adopted by consensus,
deplored torture, arbitrary arrests, forced labour, rape and sexual
abuse of women, political detentions, forced population movements,
limits on rights to meet and freedom of expression, and harassment
of religious groups and ethnic minorities.
It denounced numerous arrests and detentions linked with
political activities, while welcoming the release from house arrest
last July of Nobel Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi.
The resolution called on the government to release
unconditionally persons imprisoned for their beliefs and to allow
everybody to take part freely in the political process.
It recalled the government's obligations to end the impunity of
those who violate human rights, notably soldiers, and asked it to
inquire into rights violations committed by its officials.
