Senate Hearing on Burma Bill (S.151

Subject: Senate Hearing on Burma Bill (S.1511)

Dear Friends Burma,

Today (Wednesday, May 22, 1996) at 8:30 am, the Senate Banking Committee held
a hearing on the Burma Freedom and Democracy Act of 1995 (S.1511) at the
Dirksen Senate Office Building, Room 538, Washington, DC.

This morning's witnesses were led by Senators Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and
Daniel P. Moynihan (D-NY); Dr. Sein Win, Prime Minister of the National
Coalition Government of Union of Burma (NCGUB); Ms.Adele Lutz of Institute
for Asian Democracy, who portrayed Daw Aung San Suu Kyi in the film "Beyond
Rangoon", and David Bryne, a musician, and resident of New York. (Ms.Lutz and
Mr.Bryne who are married had visited Burma late last year and met with Daw
Aung San Suu Kyi.)

The Committee, due to their schedule which did not permit the full hearing
session today, then recessed at 9:30 am and and announced that they will
re-convene tomorrow at 1:30 pm. A representative from Unocal will testify
tomorrow, it has been learned.
(We all still have time to write to Senator Sarbanes and other Senators in
the Banking Committee to support S.1511.)

In peace and solidarity,
"Campaign for Burma Freedom Bill"
