Burma in the Crucible

Dear Madame / Sir, Your Excellency,

May I draw your kind attention to the current critical situation in Burma under
the
ruling military dictator called State Law and Order Restoration Council SLORC.
At present Burma is approaching to a crucial period with full momentum.
As U.S.Senator Mitch McConnell stated in his "Policy Options in Burma" very
recently (May 14, 1996), Burma is a battleground-
-- between democracy and dictatorship,
-- between those who believe in open markets and those who
   openly market their self-enriching schemes,
-- between the many who embrace freedom and the few who breed fear,
-- between Suu Kyi's supporters and SLORC's sycophants.
Just now it becomes a battleground between Nobel Peace Laureate Aung
San Suu Kyi and the hardlined generals as well as between the elected
parliamentarians and the selected military authoritarians.

Aung San Suu Kyi has been released since July 1995, but obviously she is
not free at all. She is under constant surveillance and severely limited in
her movements.
She has asked and is still asking the SLORC for a substantial dialogue,
which will lead to a peaceful political settlement in Burma, but up to this
date there is no substantive response from the SLORC end.
In November 1995 Aung San Suu Kyi stated clearly that the present form
of the national convention convened by SLORC is not acceptable to the
vast majority people of Burma, and hence her NLD party boycotted it.
In February 1996 the NLD party chairman asked the SLORC chairman
officially to call for a legistrative assembly of the elected representatives
and also to monitor and control the lawless activities of military in Burma.
There is no reply.
In May 1996 Aung San Suu Kyi called for an all-party conference from
May 26 to 29 at her residence in commemoration of the 6th. anniversary
of the NLD's landslide victory in May 1990 multiparty general election.
The military law and order restoration authorities arrested 44 NLD-
parliamentarians plus two wives on May 21, the number of arrest
increased to over 90 on May 22 and over 190 on May 23 with rising tendency.
It remains simply to see on the screen how few (if any) would be left for
further arrest at the entrance of Aung San Suu Kyi's residence on the
opening day of May 26.

The Burmese community worldwide protested sharply against the lawless
activities of the state law and order restoration council and calls on the
international community
++ to send a clear and loud signal to the Slorc that a violent crackdown will
no longer be tolerated, and effective measures would be made immediately,
++ to impose global economic sanctions and arms embargo on Burma
     under the military rule,
++ especially on the U.S.Government to enforce the Burma Freedom and
Democracy Act 1995 (S.1511) to become a Public Law in order to impose
     sanctions on Burma.

The Burma community worldwide expresses its gratitude for your kind
attention and continued support for Nobel Peace Laureate Aung San
Suu Kyi and the Burmese democracy movement.

Sincerely,

Nwe Aung
