Reuter: Hong Kong AI Concerned

HONG KONG AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL CONCERNED
HONG KONG, June 14 (Reuter) - The Amnesty International human rights
group tried to hand a petition to Burmese authorities in Hong Kong on
Friday but they were snubbed and left standing on the doorstep of Burma's
consulate.
The petition condemned the detention of pro-democracy activists in
Burma. The petitioners held up a big green banner captioned "Unchain
Burma."
The action was carried out by 10 members of the group, including Hong
Kong legislator Lau Chin-Shek. They left the petition, signed by 31
legislators, at the consulate door.
"They dared to arrest people but they have no guts to see us," said Lau.
Tension has risen since May when pro-democracy opposition leader Aung
San Suu Kyi defied the Burmese military government and called a congress of
her National League for Democracy, the first since her release from house
arrest last year.
More than 250 NLD members were detained.
