Massachusetts Bill Likely Become Law

BOSTON, June 11 (Reuter) - A bill that would bar Massachusetts from
buying goods from firms that do business in Burma is headed to Governor
William Weld's desk with such strong support that it would likely become
law even if the Republican governor vetoed it, the Boston Globe reported
Tuesday.
The bill, which would prohibit the state from buying products from such
firms as Apple Computer Inc, PepsiCo Inc and Texaco Inc is expected to get
its final approval from the state Senate this week, the newspaper reported.
Weld, who is usually cool to such sanction efforts, has privately
expressed interest in the proposal that would target U.S. companies with
investments or operations in the politically repressed southeast Asian
country, the Globe said.
The measure, sponsored by state Representative Byron Rushing, is aimed
at the Burmese military junta, which has been sharply criticized for human
rights violations.
The financial impact would be about $1 million, Rushing told the Globe.
