And this report from Strasbourg - on proposed European Parliamentary
dropping of tarif advantages for Burma, dated June 20 1996

STRASBOURG (France) -- The European Parliament urged
the European Union on Thursday to isolate Burma economically and
politically
in a bid to force it to move towards democracy.

The parliament said a move in June to ban the National League for
Democracy of opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu
Kyi
was a ``serious attack on human rights and freedom of expression.''

Since her release from six years of house arrest in July Suu Kyi has
made
repeated, unanswered pleas to the ruling State Law and Order Restoration
Council to hold a dialogue with her party to find a way to achieve
democrasy
for Burma.
