Subject: Sagaing Hills - An unwelcome development project

A Burmese friend from Sagaing, ask me to post these message.

The military regime in Burma has been widening and constructing
roads at the cost of misery for the Burmeses people. Houses are either
destroyed or moved to another location. Their activites are not only
limited to big cities like Rangoon and Mandalay, but are extending to
traditional sanctuaries like the Sagaing Hills in upper Burma.

For Centuries, the Sagaing Hills have been a sanctuary for Buddhist
monks, nuns and pious lay people since the days of the eary Burmese
kings. The kings had their capitals at cities such as Ava, Anarapura
and Mandalay. People have always had access to the monestaries,
remote hills and holy places. They took pilgrimages to these places
by foot or cart. They have been very happy with their traditional way
of life.

But, now the present military regime has only one purpose, the
continuation of their power in order to take in hard currency from
tourism. They are bent on developing unwelcome projects which
directly or indirectly destroy the tradtional culture and values of the
people of Burma.

This is the result of the lack of democracy, where people have the
freedom to object and stand up against such these destructive projects.

Woe be to those who ignore and destroy the traditional culture for
their own petty self interest.

Thank you Internet for enabling us to do a small service to so many
oppressed people.
