S.H.A.N : SLORC BURNS THE BARN TO SCARE THE RAT
July 08, 1996

On 20.06.96, a group of SURA ( Shan United Revolutionary Army ) troops led by
Maj. Murng Zern ambushed SLORC soldiers no.514 LIB south of Nam Ma Kung Sim
village, Wan Zing ward, Kay See township. The fight lasted about 25 minutes (
its happened after the Burmese soldiers had burned the houses of the villagers
who had secretly tried to return to their former village of Kung Sim, and when
they ( Burmese troops ) were returning to Wan Zing ). Four SLORC soldiers were
killed and 9 seriously injured.

On 28.06.96, SLORC no. 514 LIB, newly stationed at Wan Ter Tard, Nam Morng Nai,
Wan Zing circle, Kay See township, central Shan State, ( a relocation place
where people from Wan Zing circle, Murng Sorng circle, Murng Lerm circle had to
gather ), arrested 8 former MTA soldiers and killed 7 of them right away. After
that they seized a woman who was guarding the road and killed her as well.

The 7 men who were murdered were ex-MTA soldiers who had surrendered at Ho
Murng, and Nam Zarng under the command of Lt. Col. Khun Orng Thoon, and possesed
the ID-cards issued to them by SLORC on their surrender. They had come back to
live in their native village, but due to the forced relocation they had to move
along with the rest of the villagers. The Burmese soldiers alleged that SURA
group was calling back the former MTA men and some were being sent to get
information and food for SURA.

The woman was accused of being an informer for SURA whose information led to the
ambush in which SLORC troops suffered heavy casualties.

One of the 8 men, of which 7 had been killed, was being forced to lead in
searching for surrendered MTA soldiers who had surrendering ID- cards and who
had returned to their villages in the areas from Saai Mon ward down to Murng
Sorng, Norng Tao, Murng Lerm in Kay See township.

After the incidents, the Burmese troops never allowed the people of Wan Zing,
Murng Sorng, Norng Tao, Murng Lerm ( in Kay See township ) and Ton Hoong, Haai
Laai ( in Nam Zarng ) to work their farms and fields.Further more, they burned
houses, hay stacks, rice barns and even little farm coltages or huts were not
spared.

It is said that, for the time being, some desperate people who could no longer
bear the brutalities in the relocation areas are encouraging SURA and other
resistance forces to step up their fight against SLORC. " Fight and fight the
Burmese soldiers . Don't think about the safety of the people. They have
already been treated with utmost cruelty, their condition couldn't be worse ",
they would say.

On 04.07.96, SURA troops led by Capt. Zaai Leng clashed with SLORC no. 66 IB on
the motor-road near Nam Maw Khao Saen, between Nam Zarng and Kho Lam in Nam
Zarng township. The fight lasted about half-an-hour and SLORC troops suffered
some dead and wounded.
