WHAT'S HAPPENING IN RANGOON?

WHAT'S HAPPENING IN RANGOON?

According to the 7am and 11am (GMT) BBC World Service News on
27/9/96:

* Burmese troops have blocked off University Avenue to prevent
people getting to Aung San Suu Kyi's house for an NLD
congress.

* Some high-ranking figures from the NLD have been allowed
into the compound.

* According to diplomats, at least 30 people have been
arrested, but some sources on the border put the figure much
higher.

* There was no telephone access to Suu Kyi's house.

* A SLORC spokesman confirmed that some people have been
detained and said the NLD did not have permission to hold the
congress.

Other sources say that:

* 150 soldiers arrived at 10.30pm on Thursday night and sealed
off the road. In the morning the troops, now numbering 200,
detained people wanting to enter the compound.

* Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is "not restricted" but is required to
be "alone in her compound" [does this mean that those already
inside will be taken out? How does this fit with the reported
arrival of senior NLD officers?]

* On Friday afternoon, U Tin Oo addressed civilians in the
street, asking them to go home. There was talk of asking them
to go to the Shule Pagoda.

* Some diplomats were prevented from going to Suu Kyi's house.

* The scenario is similar to last May, when SLORC tried to
prevent people from attending a previous NLD congress. The
likelihood is that Suu Kyi will not be arrested.

If anyone has further information, please put it on the net.
