It appears this is what President Bill Clinton and his advisors were
waiting for. ASEAN nations balked at "Myanmar " membership. Now the
ASEAN alliance is in disarray over Burma atrocities and human rights
abuses.
La Femme D'Or, the Golden Woman -- Daw Aung San Suu Kyi -- has the whole
world doubting the self-proclaimed "legitimacy of Slorc" as "nonsense"
and child-like in its recent behavior, embarrassing its Asean
billionaire friends the entire international diplomatic and political
community at large. The Golden Lady has Slorc under more pressure to
give up the game and throw down its cards in its history of senseless
repression and contempt for democracy, bankrupting the nation as the
whole General Assembly of the United Nations, the World Bank and other
financial lending agencies wince and shake their heads in rebuke at
Slorc's dwindling image abroad.
Slorc is running out of cards, and running scared, with no tree tall
enough to shadow it, no cave deep enough to hide in, no mountain too
high to conceal its weakness and crimes. Investors, too, are scared of
what is to become of their bargain deals in a climate of uncertainty,
instability, and alarm.
In a filmed interview that was smuggled out of Burma to Brussels and
shown at EC hearings early in the week, democracy leader Suu Kyi called
upon the Europeans to vote for sanctions against the military
dictatorship,
and deny Burma access to the European Generalised System of Preferences
The EC began an inquiry into forced labour child labour in Burma earlier
this year after
complaints from the ICFTU and the European Trade Union Confederation.
The International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU) report on
Burmese forced labour says that many Burmese have been killed or
reported missing after being recruited by the army as forced labourers.
Yet, on the issue European Commission technocrats dragged their heels,
and with wagging tails, waited for the US to assert is world
leadership. Meanwhile Slorc is in a quandry over where to hide its
billions, knowing full well that a democratic Burma will call on all
international banks to return the billions stolen from Burma through
drugs and illegitimate business deals.
Slorc is afraid to harm Suu Kyi. Alive she is dangerous, and in like her
father a great leader and the stuff of martyrs she is ubiquitous an
omnipresent. Slorc can not contain her movement, no matter how greatly
they try to isolate her. Slorc propaganda is now ridiculed throughout
the world while millions in Burma come to her support in Burma and
outside, in the United States, Europe and far parts of the world where
she has emerged as a great fearless fighter for liberty. Strenthened by
her steady faith in Buddhism, and daily meditation, on the world she she
has no equal. Even against the angry bunch of Slorc generals and heroin
drug trafficers of the Golden Triangle and from other regions of Burma,
Suu Kyi's appeal for dialogue infuriate the old men who have for far too
long usurped the power of the Burmese people and its numerous ethnic
populations, the Karens, the Mons, the Rohingyas, the Shans and other
indigenous groups.
Suu Kyi has a greatness of beauty, calm inner strength and power to
render truth visible and clear. Her logical mind and visionary
intelligence surpass her and inspires her supporters, in a way unlike
Mahatma Gandhi's followers filled the British jails during India's
non-violent resistance movement in the era when her father General Aung
San led Burma to freedom.
Slorc is prisoner and keeper of the prison - and Suu Kyi hold the keys.
A wall of support now stands tall and day by day grows taller in both
the United States and Europe. In Japan and Australia Suu Kyi inspires
admiration and respect. The ball is in the court of the European
Commission to heed her call for sanctions as this is a time for action
- and not just to be heard.
The Burmese butchers put an entire leadership of a political party in
jail. You do not do this unless you have the army under your control.
Still, with all its firepower, Slorc cannot hide from the international
condemnation of its violations against humanity and its direct and
responsible role in the Genocide of the Karens, Shans, Mons and other
indigenous tribes through forced relocation and mass murder. Today,
Slorc battalions defect in rising numbers. And as the army crumbles
adding further chaos to disorder, Slorc's leaders, as in Bosnie, must be
called before International Courts of Human Rights and Justice, and be
held accountable for alleged Crimes against Humanity.
The struggle for democracy in Burma and the restoration of the authority
of the NLD has reached a turning point in its history. Time is running
out on Slorc, and the wedge of US angry condemnation of Slorc has gone
deeper into widening the gap of negotiation for political reconcilation
and a true democratic process restored in Burma.
Let us see the Europeans act with invincible will and determination as
we pray that it happens soon.
Metta, thank you, peace, happiness and long life. Virtually yours,
