                SUU KYI'S CAR ATTACKED (BY USDA?)
 
 
BBC World Service news bulletins at 14.00 and 15.00 GMT of
9/Nov/96 reported that [on Saturday 9 November] demonstrators,
said to comprise members of the Union Solidarity and
Development Association (USDA), attacked a convoy of NLD cars
carrying Aung San Suu Kyi and colleagues to deliver her
Saturday speech at a place some way from Aung San Suu Kyi's
house. Aung San Suu Kyi was not hurt, but U Tin Oo was said to
have been slightly injured. 
 
The 14.00 bulletin stated that the demonstration "attacked a
convoy of cars carrying the opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi
and two of her senior colleagues. The BBC Southeast Asia
correspondent quotes witnesses as saying that the attackers
appeared to be organised by Burma's military authorities. They
threw stones at the cars and attacked them with iron bars.
Aung San Suu Kyi was not injured, but a Deputy Chairman of her
party, Tin Oo, was slightly hurt. The attack occurred after
the
authorities prevented pro-democracy supporters gathering at
Aung San Suu Kyi's home by erecting barricades around it."  
 
It was the 13.00 GMT bulletin which stated that Suu Kyi was on
her way to address supporters, and that the demonstrators
comprised members of USDA. The bulletin commented that USDA
would not have made the attack without the approval of the
military authorities.
