                     RANGOON, Burma (AP) -- Waving
                     banners saying "Fight for Freedom"
and "Give Me Human Rights," some
                     1,000 students demonstrated Monday
in front of Rangoon University in the
largest such protest in Burma in years.

                     The protesters seemed divided
                     between those stressing calls for
freedom and human rights and those
                     stressing non- political demands, such
as urging that the government grant
students more independence and investigate police
		     brutality.

Security forces were not immediately deployed to
break up the protest and there was no apparent link
between the demonstration and the democracy movement
led by Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi.
