Bangkok Demonstration Joint Stateme

Subject: Bangkok Demonstration Joint Statement

STATEMENT ON THE POLITICAL SITUATION IN BURMA
              ---------------------------------------------
                            6th December 1996
                            -----------------
                           	 Bangkok
                                 -------

We condemn the brutal arrests and oppression by the slorc on the
on the peaceful demonstration by the students and the people on
December 2, 1996.

We condemn the confinement of the NLD General Secretary Daw Aung
San Suu Kyi.

We support the peaceful demonstration of the students. The brutal
arrests and oppression of that peaceful demonstration and the
confinement shows there has been no democratic development in
Burma.

Further more, it highlights the fact that the slorc is still
violating and oppressing the basic human rights in Burma.

The slorc cannot solve the problems of Burma by arresting and
oppressing the people. The arrests and oppression will only fuel
the problems.

We demand the Slorc to -

     - meet the demands of the students immediately
     - release all imprisoned students and political activists
     - stop oppressing the right to organize freely
     - solve the problems of Burma by entering into a tripartite
dialogue with the democratic forces led by Daw Aung San
Suu Kyi and the ethnic nationalities

We call upon the international community -

     - to condemn the oppression and warn the slorc to enter into
the tripartite dialogue for as long as the slorc is in
       power, the oppression will continue
     - to revoke all the investments with slorc
     - especially the Asean countries to refrain from befriending
the oppressive slorc regime and admitting it to the Asean.
