possible prisoner of conscience San

Subject: possible prisoner of conscience San Myaing

----------

Dear all,

I am the c.p. of a local Amnesty International group in Alkmaar, the
Netherlands. AI Alkmaar, the Netherlands has taken it upon them to investigate
the case of San Myaing, a student who was arrested after joining
demonstrations on 10 and 11 December of 1991, at the University of Yangon and
Mandalay. These demonstrations called for the immediate and unconditional
release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and other political prisoners. I know that
San Myaing was sentenced by a military tribunal in July 1992, during his
imprisonment in Insein Prison, where he was held in the Thi Thant section. On
the 24th of June 1994 San Myaing and 30 other political prisoners were
transferred from Insein Prison to either Myingyan prison in Magway division or
Taungoo prison in Bago division.

I am sending this message in the hope that anybody reading it can give us a
lead on how to obtain this information on San's whereabouts and health. Maybe
there is a Burmese student in excile, who has been in Insein early 1994, or
who has heard about a student by the name San Myaing.

Our long term goals (to get public awareness on local and national level in
the Netherlands on the human rights situation in Burma) are reasonably
achieved, but with the investigation on San Myaing we need some new contacts
to go on with.

Thanks and Free Burma,

Anja Sloot
