Burma-surrender : Burma reports surrender of 67
insurgents
BANGKOK, March 25 (AFP) - A total of 67
anti-government
guerrillas in Burma surrendered to the ruling
military authorities
last month, Burmese official radio reported
Tuesday.
Those who surrendered included 54 Karen and two
Chin ethnic
minorities, nine militant pro-democracy students
from the All
Burma Students Democratic Front and two former
members of the
Burma Communist Party, Radio Rangoon said in a
broadcast
monitored here.
The rebels gave themselves up with their weapons
to the
Burmese army in February, it added.
The student front was set up in the jungles
along the
Thai-Burmese border by pro-democracy students
who fled
Rangoon and other major cities after a bloody
military coup in
1988.
