Burma: Won't Retaliate Against U.S. Sanctions

RANGOON, Burma (Reuter) - Burma has no plans to retaliate against the
United States for economic sanctions imposed
last week on Rangoon, Foreign Minister Ohn Gyaw said Sunday.

"We don't intend to take any retaliatory measures against the U.S. for
their decision to impose economic sanctions against
us," Ohn Gyaw told Reuters.

"They started it on their own volition and we'll just let it go," he
said. "In fact it will not affect our country so much."

The United States Tuesday announced a ban on all new American investments
in Burma in condemnation of the military
government's alleged human rights abuses and repression of the democracy
movement led by Nobel Peace laureate Aung
San Suu Kyi.

Although top Burmese officials said last week the sanctions would not
have much impact on Burma, some analysts had
expected the government to take retaliatory action.

Last October the military government suspended visas for high-level
American officials just days after the United States
announced a similar ban on visas for top officials in Burma's ruling
State Law and Order Restoration Council (SLORC).

The United States is the fourth largest investor in Burma in terms of
approved foreign investment.

Washington, along with most Western governments and international
agencies, stopped aid to Burma when the SLORC
seized power in 1988 after quashing pro-democracy demonstrations.
