U.S. IN A 'PICKLE' OVER SANCTIONS: MYANMAR

The United States is "in a pickle" over its decision to
impose sanctions on Myanmarese, which fell flat after
Yangon was assured the backing of Asean, the Burmese
official press said today.

An editorial in the English-language New Light of
Myanmar said Washington had been trying to wield its
influence through the threat of sanction and been
forced to carry it out rather than lose face by backing
down.

"America's act was prepared and perpetrated with a two-
pronged intention; to overturn whatever we have
achieved and to unseat the government which they cannot
manipulate," the editorial said.

"To turn to an American idiom, one might say the U.S.
administration is in a pickle. It had to do what it did
because having threatened us with such action it could
not back out. Backfire it will. It's going to prove a
fiasco,"

The editorial said the U.S. had worked consistently to
undermine the achievements of the ruling junta, but
added that Myanmar had received a massive show of
support from the Association of South-East Asian
Nations (Asean).
Myanmar is expected to become a full member of the
Asean which groups Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the
Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam later this
year despite U.S. and European objections. (AFP)
