HEADLINE: Burmese Defence Forces ''will hand over power'' after elections

Brig Gen Khin Nyunt, director of Defence Services intelligence, held a
meeting with foreign military attaches on 22nd September to explain ''important
matters about the country'', Rangoon radio reported. He said that, up to 17th
September, the Defence Forces had not used firearms, but that ''those bent on
violence'' had taken advantage of the ''kindness and benevolence'' of the
Defence Forces and had created a ''situation of anarchy''. Elections would be
held as soon as law and order had been restored, and the Defence Forces would
then ''systematically hand over state power to the party which wins'', Khin
Nyunt said.* For details see Sections

Gen Saw Maung, speaking on Rangoon radio on the 23rd, also assured the
Burmese people that the Defence Forces had ''no desire to hold on to state power
for a prolonged period''. He called upon political parties to keep their
followers under control and prepare to participate in the elections.** Details
