Vietnamese leader meets with Burmese

BANGKOK, May 23 (UPI) _ Vietnamese Communist Party chief Do Muoi is meeting
with the
leaders of Burma's ruling military junta in Rangoon.

Burmese media reports say today Do Muoi, who is on a three-day official
visit to Burma, met
(Thursday) with Than Shwe, chairman of Burma's State Law and Order
Restoration Council and
senior generals Maung Aye and Khin Nyunt.

Details of the talks were not available, but analysts say Burma's impending
entry into the
Association of Southeast Asian Nations was likely high on the agenda.

Do Muoi's visit was seen as a boost to Rangoon's effort to become an ASEAN
member.

The United States this week officially implemented economic sanctions
against Burma as
punishment for Rangoon's human rights abuses.

ASEAN foreign ministers are scheduled to meet in Malaysia May 31 to discuss
the timing of
ASEAN's expansion along with U.S. calls for a tougher line on Burma.

Earlier this week the U.S. State Department condemned the Burmese government
for arresting
100 members of opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for
Democracy.

The arrests were aimed at preventing the league from holding a party
congress to commemorate
the anniversary of its 1990 general election victory, which was ignored by
the ruling junta.
