Supression of Political Freedom and Violations of Human Rights by the SLORC
Regime in Burma.

Bangkok, Thailand.
27th May, 1997.

A statement jointly issued by the Thai and Burmese Students on the Occassion
of Commemorating the Seventh Anniversary of the NLD Party's Election Victory
in the 1990 Nationwide Multi-Party Democractic Election in Burma

Today, seven years ago in 1990, is the day that the Burmese people went to
the poll to elect the persons who will represent them in the democratically
elected government. They casted their votes with complete confidence that,
after thirty years of oppressive rule, the military dictators were finally
giving political power back to the people. Before the the election, the
SLORC regime made their mighty promise clear and loud for all to hear that
they have no intention of clinging on to power forever and that they will
definately hand over power to whichever political party win the election.
But, soon after the election, the Burmese people and the whole world
realized that the SLORC has no intention of keeping their promise. They have
no real intention of transferring power to the politicla party that win the
election. And their real intention is to cling to power indefinately.

The NLD party won most of the votes in this election and came out as the
clear winner. But, instead of transfering the power to the NLD, the SLORC
started to crack down on NLD members and supporters. The SLORC constantly
harrassed, arrested, jailed, tortured, and murdered the NLD members and
supporters. Many NLD members and supporters have been forced to flee to
other countries to escape the SLORC's brutal supression.

In commemoration of the Seventh Anniversary of the NLD's election victory,
we, the democracy loving Thai and Burmese students, strongly condemn the
SLORC rulers for their supression of political freedoms and violations of
human rights in Burma.

We urge the SLORC to immediately and unconditionally;

1. free all recently arrested NLD party representatives who were travelling
to Rangoon to attend the Seventh Anniversary of their election victory, and
all poltiical prisioners and studnet activists still detaineed by the SLORC.

2. Honour the promise made to the Burmese people by allowing the NLD party,
the party that has won the election, to form the government and then to
transfer power to the democratically elected government.

3. Stop all forms of Human Rights violations against the Burmese people.

We also urge the ASEAN governments to review their constructive engagement
policy towards the SLORC regime, and to delay the admission of Burma into
ASEAN membership until the regime has handed over political power to the
democratically elected government.

And we futher urge the EU governments and other governments around the world
to put more pressure on the SLORC regime to transfer the power to the
elected government and to stop human rights violations.
