LETTER OF CONDOLENCE
LETTER OF CONDOLENCE
The ABSDF is saddened to learn that U Tin Shwe, Central Committee member and one of the leaders of the Mandalay Division Organizing Committee of the National League for Democracy (NLD), had died in Rangoon on 9 June, 1997 while in detention. According to
the SLORC, he supposedly died of a heart attack. His family said he had never suffered from heart problems before his imprisonment.
U Tin Shwe, also known as Monywa Tin Shwe, has been an important member of Burma's pro-democracy movement. His untimely death is a great loss to all of us.
We condemn the SLORC which detained and sentenced him twice to long prison terms for his political beliefs, and sent him to his death. U Tin Shwe, who was arrested for alleged instigation of civil unrest and attempting to form a parallel government, was
first detained in 1991 and later had his sentence doubled.
Our sorrows are with his family.
