ASEAN EXPRESSES CONCERN ABOUT CAMBODIAN POLITICAL SITUATION

	     Monday 9 June, 1997 (8:48pm AEST)

Two senior ASEAN officials have expressed concern about
the political situation in Cambodia during a visit to Phnom
Penh to officially inform the Cambodian government that the
country will be admitted into the regional grouping next
          month.

ASEAN secretary-general Ajit Singh and Malaysian Foreign
Minister Abdullah Ahmed Badawi told senior government
officials that while ASEAN has concerns about the political
situation they were not an impediment to full membership.

Mr Singh and Mr Badawi completed a similar mission to
Laos last Friday, and travel to Burma tomorrow.

ASEAN foreign ministers decided last month to admit
Cambodia, Burma and Laos into the regional grouping on
July the 23rd despite concerns particularly over Burma's
          human rights record.
