Indo-Burma border news
 
1. Since a couple of months back, SLORC ordered all sellers, businessman
and businesswoman from Tamu to do their business only in Nanfalon, a
village on Burma soil. Indo-Burma border trading has been taken placed in
Moreh, an Indian border town for decades. That made not only Indian
business people but also Burmese pro-democracy activists difficult. But
India changed in response that from 6th July 1997, the gate 2 will be
closed so that no business will take place in Nanfalon by tomorrow.
Indo-Burma border trade is subject to controversy.
 
2. In 1990 the exchange rate from Kyat to Rupee was 3:1 and in 1996 it
became 3.5:1. But today 100 rupee is equivalent to 470 kyat. However no
one wants to exchange kyat to rupee. That means value of SLORC kyat will
fall beyond today's rate.
 
3. Commencing on 2 nd October, the birthday of Mahatama Gandhi, Samata and
its allied parties from India will stage a human-chain blockade against
Indo-Burma border trading as it is. Indo-Burma border trade allows just to
flourish made-in-China goods and drugs into North-East of India. All
Burmese activist will join the campaign then.
 
4. Maj. V.J.S. Grewal who is serving under Director-General of Military
Intelligence of India is working in the Indian team which is constructing
Tamu-Kalay road in accordance with Indo-Burma border agreement. Grewal is
an Indo-Burmese and his Burmese name is U Myo Myint. He was paid by MIS of
the SLORC to help deporting 11 ex-soldiers and a student, Ko Ko Naing from
Pegu who has been taking refuge in India since 1988 and at present is in
Monywa jail. This news will be broadcast from RFA tomorrow.
 
5. Today, a Burmese delegation led by Dr. Tint Swe, had a meeting with Ms.
Nimal Deshpande of Gandhi Ashram. Ms. Nimal Deshpande is the most renown
Indian lady who is dedicated and working for Gandhism on Ahimisa,
non-violence after the death of Mahatama Gandhi. Both parties agreed to
form the India-Burma-Tibet joint committee on non-violence movement and to
open the Burma chapter under the Association of Peoples of Asia.
