UN secretary general to brief Security Council on Cambodia: officials

posted at 13:42 hrs (Bangkok time)

PHNOM PENH, July 7 -- UN Secretary General Kofi Annan is to brief the
Security Council on the conflict in Cambodia as fears mount for the
safety of MPs loyal to the country's first premier, officials here said
Monday.

The UN chief will raise the issue of Cambodia, where troops loyal to the
two feuding co-premiers clashed in two days of pitched street battles in
the capital at the weekend, in New York later Monday, UN officials said.

One of the topics to be discussed in the briefing will be the safety and
security of parliamentarians and ministers loyal to First Prime Minister
Prince Norodom Ranariddh, who appeared to have lost control of Phnom
Penh.

''We are seriously concerned about the safety of these MPs after (Second
Prime Minister) Hun Sen's speech last night,'' one UN official said
here.

Hun Sen said in a two-hour radio broadcast after apparently gaining the
upper hand in the battle for Phnom Penh late Sunday that MPs who fail to
split with prince Ranariddh should be replaced by the royalist FUNCINPEC
party.

He also rejected mediation efforts by King Sihanouk, Prince Ranariddh's
father and called for the arrest of the first premier. (AFP)
