Tourists held for drug tests

DEPUTY Interior Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung ordered drug testing of
about 80 Thais and foreign tourists early yesterday morning after a raid
by 150 policemen failed to find any illegal drugs in Patpong bars.

Chalerm, who led the raid, claimed he had received a tip-off that drug
dealing and abuse was rife in the area.

But when the small army of police and sniffer dogs found nothing, he
resorted to a face-saving gesture, instructing police to take tourists
who had been drinking at bars in the nightlife area to the Police
Hospital for urine tests.

They were all released after the tests and no charges were laid.

Chalerm, flanked by Narcotics Suppression Division Commander Pol Maj Gen
Rerngchai Imsamran and Pol Maj Gen Sompop Sakuntawipak, commander of the
Metropolitan Police Bureau's Division 7, led the 2 am raid.
