(Asia Week July 18th)
Week of July 18, 1997
DRUG TRAFFIC The U.N. Drug Control Program and six East Asia countries
which produce the bulk of the world's heroin began talks in Bangkok on
July 8. It was the second ministerial-level meeting for the Mekong River
Six - Cambodia, China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam - since they
signed a memorandum of understanding with the U.N. in 1993 to attempt to
deal with the problem.
"THERE WILL BE NO REAL DEMOCRACY IF WE CAN'T GURANTEE THE RIGHTS OF THE
MINORITY ETHNIC PEOPLE. ONLY UNDERSTANDING THEIR SUFFERING AND HELPING
THEM TO EXERCISE THEIR RIGHTS WILL ASSIST PREVENTING FROM THE
DISINTEGRATION AND THE SESESSION." "WITHOUT UNDERSTANDING THEIR
STRENGTH, WE CAN'T TOPPLE THE SLORC AND BURMA WILL NEVER BE IN PEACE."
