Suu Kyi attends Martyrs Day

July 19 (AFP)- Burmese pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi attended an
official wreath-laying Martyrs'Day celebration here Saturday, commemorating
the 50th anniversary of her father's assination.

In her first public appearance in several months, Aung San Suu kyi showed
no sign of her recent health problems as she paid homage to General Aung
San and other independence heroes at Rangoon's towering Shwedagon pagoda.

She looked frail but was walking briskly, as she personally laid flowers
before her farther's tomb at the foot of the pagoda, an AFP reporter saw.

Her elder brother Aung San Oo, who is visiting Burma from United States
also attended the sombre ceremony, as well as a delegation from the
military government, led by the minister of culter.

Later Saturday, Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy(NLD) was
planning a religious ceremony at the NLD leader's lakeside residence here
to mark Martyrs' Day, to which party officials from cross Rangoon were
invited.
