ACTION!!!! ACTION!!!! ACTION!!!! ACTION
While U S goverment impose sanction on Burmese military regime both the
Australian government and ASEAN goverments reject the way which we
should take action against on the natorious regime.
The ASEAN accept the Burmese military group as a member of the
ASEAN.
But the Australian government has done nothing on the ASEAN decision on
Burma. As the most democratic government in the region, Australian
government should codemn the ASEAN.
So , we should call the Australian government
- to condemn the ASEAN's decision on Burma NOW!!!!
- to impoes scantion against Burma
- to make strong policy on Burma (not sitting on the fence)
ELLE (woman magazine)Australia, May 1997
The official Australian line on Burma
Both the previous Labor and the current Coalition Government's
apporoashes to the situation in Burma have been criticised for being
confused, weak and framed by economic rather than humanitarian
considerations. Typical of this was the high-profile visit to Rangoon in
February 1995 by former Prime Minister Bob Hawke, who led a bussiness
delegation to discuss investment in Burma but remained resolutely silent
on the human rights issue. Certainly, the Australian position on Burma
falls far short of the tough stance taken against the apartheid regime
in South Africa. Indicative of our aparoach was a comment made by the
Foreign Minister, Alexander Downer, last year. While acknowledging that
the previous government's policy had failed to produce improvements in
human rights in Burma, Mr Downer said there would be no change in
Australia's stance. And while our chief ally, the United States, has
threteatened economic sanctions against Burma, Australia has ruled out
such action, preferring to adopt a position more closely aligned with
that of our Asian neighbours, who this year are likely to accept the
countiy's application to join ASEAN.
