Soros fund: Our forex activities not linked to Burma 26/7

THE Soros Fund Management (SFM) of famed financier George Soros on Thursday
denied
suggestions it had intervened on South-east Asian currency markets in order
to punish certain
governments that supported Myanmar's admission to Asean.

Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, in a thinly veiled attack on Mr
Soros published on
Tuesday, charged that a foreign financier -- whom he did not name -- had
upset currencies in
order to pursue his own political agenda. Mr Soros was clearly the target.

SFM spokesman Shawn Pattison insisted there was no link between the
activities of the fund and
a philanthropic organisation started by Mr Soros, the Open Society Institute.

The institute aims to promote democracy and provides financial aid for
several countries, notably
in central and eastern Europe.

Its Myanmar project, according to a 1996 annual report, "generates
international awareness of
the repressive military dictatorship . . . and supports education and
training for Myanmese refugees
who hope eventually to return to live and work in a democratic Myanmar". -- AFP
