             MUSLIMS OF BURMA FLEE TO BANGLA
===========================================================

Chittagong, July 14: Burmese Muslims, complaining of a
growing food shortage and continuing persecution by
Rangoon's military junta, have started to flee again into
Bangladesh, the officials said on Monday.

"At least 5,000 Muslims were detected to have crossed into
Cox's Bazar district from Burma's western Arakan province
over the last two months," one official said.

"But border police could arrest only about 1,500 of them
and pushed them back home."

The rest of the Muslims, called Rohingyas, mingled with
local people or fled into the nearby hills, he told
reporters.

More than 250,000 Rohingyas fled to southeastern Bangladesh
in early 1992 from Arakan, complaining of military
persecution and forced labour.

Repatriation, supervised by the UN High Commissioner for
Refugees, had begun in September that year following an
agreement between Dhaka and Rangoon. (Reuter)
