RESPONSE TO ? THE PLOT THICKENS IN RANGOON ? BY CHAO-TZANG YAWNGHWE IN JULY
29th. "THE NATION" NEWSPAPER

I.	Chao-Tzang Yawnghwe has as usual and as always managed to create a story
on SLORC which readers with limited knowledge on Myanmar might find it
sensational or plausible. But a knowledgeable person with some insight can
immediately point out the flaws Chao-Tzang Yawnghwe has based his story on.
To pinpoint a few they are : -

	(a)	? It is reported that former Shan State Army leaders and Kanyod, who
defected from Khun Sa are able to personally meet Khin Nyunt whenever they
request a meeting.?

	(b)	? Also, sources close to "cease-fire" leaders have explained to their
contacts in Thailand to mollify Karen guerilla leader Gen. Bo Mya and other
pro-democratic forces - that their endorsement of Khin Nyunt is a tactical
move, and that they are not in the slightest taken in by Khin Nyunt's
explanation or version of the explosion.?

	(c)	? It is widely believed that Khun Sa is Maung Aye's man, since it was
Maung Aye, who brought Khun Sa " into the legal fold " .?

	(d)	? ( Khun Sa has, so far not endorsed Khin Nyunt's press briefing.)?

	(e)	? Burmese culture is such that those who are inferior always submit to
those they regard as a superior.?

	(f)	As the situation stands, it would seem that Khin Nyunt's rivals have
been outflanked. Their inability to "avenge" the death of Tin Oo's daughter
and their
acceptance of Khin Nyunt's rather unconvincing explanation for the bombing at

Tin Oo's house, indicated that their position is not as strong as most people
thought it was.

II.	To analyze his flaws or fabrications let us look into each of the
following
paragraphs : -

	(a)	Chao-Tzang Yawnghwe conveniently failed to mention Lt. Gen. Khin Nyunt
is the Chairman of the Work Committee for Development of Border Areas and
National Races. Lt. Gen. Khin Nyunt from time to time meet the leaders of the
former insurgent groups to discuss development of their respective areas and
to assist them in adapting to their new life inside the bounds of law.
Yawnghwe has missed this point in the desperation to bring in Kanyod into the
scenario to counterplay Khun Sa as General Maung Aye's man.
2/3
	(b)	This para. is a wishful thinking from not only Yawnghwe but all those
who are anti-Myanmar Government. ? Sources close to cease-fire leaders have
explained to their contacts in Thailand ? is very vague makeup story which is
no match to nullify the strong support the nationalities have clearly stated
in their support for Lt. Gen. Khin Nyunt's statement.

	(c)	Mr. Yawnghwe here again made a big blunder by stating that Gen. Maung
Aye brought Khun Sa into the legal fold which is unrepairable regardless of
what explanation he may later come up with. He had focused too much on
driving a wedge between Gen. Maung Aye and Lt. Gen. Khin Nyunt by playing
Khun Sa and Kanyod against each other that he strayed away from reality which
is quite well known even in Yangon diplomatic circle.

	(d)	Khun Sa need not endorse the press briefing because he is not in the
same category as those who came back into the legal fold. Khun Sa surrendered

unconditionally and his forces has been disbanded.

	(e)	Burmese always submitting to those they regard "superior" is not only
Yawnghwe lack of knowledge of his own country and countrymen but may be his
way of showing resentment to the present government of the 1962 incident that
took place in Yangon. It is learnt that his brother was killed in a shoot-out
when a coup took place by Gen. Ne Win's government. He has been holding a
deep personal grudge since then and has been against all successive Myanmar
Governments. Again Yawnghwe's personal grudges has clouded his thought on
Myanmar mentality. Myanmar people has proven themselves that they never
submit to any person or country regardless of size, strength and power.

	(f)	This para. is the standard allegation from the anti-Myanmar groups and
dissidents alike. A standard wedge driving method between the leaders or at
least make it sound like there is a terrible split among the leadership. This
sort of allegation surfaced since (1992) with a lot of predictions being
given which none of them came true.

III.	Studying Yawnghwe's background and his writings, one can analyze and
appreciate his true nature. He has not only been constantly writing negative
information but fabricating them as well. What Yawnghwe failed to realize is
time has changed and what happened to his family in 1962 was during the
period of a different government (35) years ago. Even the ethnic dissident
groups that were fighting against the central government back then have now
given up their line of arms struggle and are living peacefully together under
the rule of law. They have all joined hands with the government in bringing
in peace, tranquility, national unity while rebuilding a new nation.

Even though Yawnghwe's articles continue to highlight racial hatred, ethnic
repression and the usual antigovernment lyrics. In reality, a handful of die
hard
terrorists and extremist dissidents like himself are the only ones left out
while all others are busy in shouldering their respective responsibilities in
the nation rebuilding task.

It is about time Yawnghwe should forgive and forget the past and come in into
today's world.

We hope it will not take him too much time to realize today is 1997 and not
1962 although the present government may still be military as the one in
1962, but in reality the concept should be taken in as, ? the horse may be
the same but the jockey is different.?
