Burmese Junta Urged to talk opposition

Veteran Burmese politicians have made a fresh appeal to the ruling  junta
to open talks  with Aung San Suu Kyi's  opposition National League for
Democracy(NLD)

In a three-page letter to  the junta, the group of polticians hailed the
July 17 meeting between  the junta first  secretary, Lieutenant General
Khin Nyunt, and NLD chairman Aung Shwe  as an "initial step towards a
dialogue." They  said  the junta and the NLD," who are at loggerheads with
each other, should meet as soon as possible to solve the political impasse
in the interest of the country and the people." A copy of the letter, dated
August 5, was received by  AFP Thursday.  The veteran politicians were led
by Bohmy Aung, 87, a former defence minister and one of the 3o"comrades"
who spearheaded the fight forBurma's independence from Britain. They look
pains to explain that letter of appeal had not been writtern  at the
behest of any organization, " foreign of therwise." The junta has
frequently alleged foreing interference in its affairs.  

"We have madethis appeal solely motivated by  out heart felt desire to see
the crisis solved and national reconciliation restored," the letter said.
Earlier appeals for dialogue betweem the NLD and the junta,officially 
known as the State Law and Order Restoration Council(SLORC), have not met
with success.  

The NLD won general election in 1990 but the SLORC refused
to hand over power and instead launched a fresh  crackdown  on the
opposition.
