BRITISH FOREIGN MINISTER ATTACKS BURMA'S MILITARY GOVERNMENT
	************************************************************

British Foreign Minister, Robin Cook, has attacked Burma's
military government for its drugs and human rights record,
effectively ruling out its participation in next year's
          Asia-Europe summit.

Mr Cook said governments of the developed world were not
prepared to recognise Burma's regime until it accepted
democratic reforms and cooperated in fighting the drug
          menace.

He said Burma's military junta was not only a deeply
repressive regime, but also a deeply irresponsible regime.

Mr Cook said the military junta was one of the few
governments in the world whose members were prepared to
profit in the drugs trade rather than repress it.

Burma is the world's largest producer of opium.

Mr Cook is on the last day of a two-day visit to Singapore.
