BURMA'S NATIONAL LEAGUE FOR DEMOCRACY PLANS MASS MEETING
Saturday 13 September, 1997
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Burma's pro-democracy party headed by Aung San Suu Kyi has announced plans to
hold a two-day mass meeting at her residential compound to mark the party's
ninth anniversary.
But, as ginny Stein reports, whether it can go ahead remains to be seen.
"The National League for democracy attempted to hold a party meeting last
year, but the country's military authorities barred the meeting and detained
over 500 party supporters. Since then, the State Law and Order Restoration
Council, known as the SLORC, has maintained the ban and restricted access to
Aung San Suu Kyi's residential compound in the Burmese capital. The National
League for Democracy won elections in 1990, but the military rulers who seized
power two years before have refused to recognise the result. Australia's
special envoy to Burma, John Dauth, yesterday met with SLORC officials to
discuss their intent to engage with the NLD."
