Police nab expat after democracy outcry
BURMA
A Western man handcuffed himself to a high school fence in Rangoon yesterday
and shouted democracy slogans before being cut free by police and taken in for
questioning. Troops were deployed in an apparent bid to prevent a bigger
demonstration flaring.
The school was closed for a public holiday and no general unrest resulted from
the unprecedented protest.
Burmese dissidents in Bangkok identified the man as Londoner James Mawdsley,
19, a dual British and Australian national.
