(1)   General Maung Aye receives Military Attaches of  Indonesia
 
YANGON, 22 Oct Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services
Commander-in-Chief  (Army) General Maung Aye received Military Attache of the
Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia  Col Yohanes A Hascaryo, who had
completed his tour of duty here, and his successor Col Hary  Bambang at Dagon
Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 8.30 am today.

 Together with General Maung Aye were Chief of the Office of Strategic
Studies Director of  Defence Services Intelligence Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Chief
of the Bureau of Special Operations Chief  of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo,
Commander-in-Chief (Air) Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe and Chief of Staff  (Navy) Commodore
Nyunt Thein.

(2)   Deputy Premier receives Nichimen GM
 
YANGON, 22 Oct- General Manager Mr Kazuo Susa of Nichimen Corporation of
Japan  called on Member of the State Law and Order Restoration Council
Chairman of Myanmar  Investment Commission Deputy Prime Minister Vice-Admiral
Maung Maung Khin at his office this  afternoon.

 Also present were officials of Government Office and MIC.

(3)   Gifts for Health Department

YANGON, 22 Oct- Partners in Progress presented medicines and medical
equipment worth  over $ 4,000 for hospitals of the Health Department this
afternoon.

 Country Manager Mr Kenneth N Fox of the company explained the purpose of the
donation.

 He then presented the gifts to Deputy Director-General Dr Wan Maung of the
Health Department  at the latter's office.

 Directors and officials of the Health Department were also present.

(4)   USDA study delegation leaves for PRC
 
YANGON, 22 Oct-A study delegation led by CEC member of the Union Solidarity
and  Development Association Deputy Minister for Information U Thein Sein
left here this afternoon for  the People's Republic of China at the
invitation of All China Youth Federation.

 The delegation was seen off at the airport by Minister for Science and
Technology and Acting  Minister for Information U Thaung, Ambassador of PRC
Mr Liang Dong and embassy staff, heads  of departments and enterprises under
the Ministry of Information, officials and relatives.

 The delegation members are EC member of Ayeyawady Division USDA Dr Aung
Phyo, Secretary  of Mandalay District USDA U Thein Tun, Secretary of Myeik
District USDA U Soe Moe Naing,  Secretary of Leshi Township USDA U Shi Thee
and EC member of Shan State (East) Kengtung  Township USDA Daw Nan Ni Laing
Saing.

(5)   Protection of intellectual property will bring more  foreign investment
 
YANGON, 22 Oct-The WIPO National Seminar on Intellectual Property organized
by the  World Intellectual Property Organization in cooperation with the
Ministry of Science and  Technology commenced at 10 am today at the Yangon
University Diamond Jubilee Conference  Centre on Pyay Road here.

 The opening ceremony was addressed on behalf of the Minister for Science and
Technology U  Thaung by U Aung Koe, Director-General of the Myanmar
Scientific and Technological Research  Department, who also delivered his
welcome speech.

 He was followed by Mr N K Sabharwal, Director, Development Corporation
(Industrial Property)  and External Relations Bureau for Asia and the
Pacific, WIPO.

 The Minister, in his address, welcomed the foreign speakers and local
participants and thanked  WIPO for sponsoring the seminar.

(6)   National Convention Convening Commission meets
 
YANGON, 22 Oct - The National Convention Convening Commission held a meeting
at the  Commission Office this afternoon.

 It was attended by Chairman of National Convention Convening Commission
Lt-Gen Myo Nyunt,  Vice-Chairman Brig-Gen Myo Thant and Commission members.
The meeting Chairman Lt-Gen Myo Nyunt delivered an address.

 Members of the respective committees presented matters pertaining to the
National Convention.

 Commission members looked into their requirements.

 It ended in the evening.

(7)   Delegation led by Deputy Minister for PBANRDA leaves  for Malaysia
 
YANGON, 22 Oct- A delegation led by Deputy Minister for Progress of Border
Areas and  National Races and Development Affairs U Kyaw Tin left here for
Malaysia by air this afternoon to  attend Inaugural Meeting of ASEAN
Ministers on Rural Development and Poverty Eradication.
The meeting will be held in Malaysia from 22 to 24 October.

 The delegation was seen off at Yangon International Airport by Member of the
State Law and  Order Restoration Council Minister for Progress of Border
Areas and National Races and  Development Affairs Lt-Gen Maung Thint,
Ambassador of Malaysia Dato Abdul Wahab Bin  Harun, officials and families of
delegation members.

 Director-General Dr Mya Maung of Agricultural Planning Department, one of
the delegation  members, left for Malaysia on 19 October in advance.

(8)   Minister inspects factories in Insein

YANGON, 22 Oct-Acting Minister for Industry-1 Minister for Livestock and
Fisheries U  Aung Thaung inspected a blanket factory and a garment factory of
Myanma Textile Industries in  Insein Township this afternoon.

 Accompanied by Deputy Minister for Industry-2 U Than Nyunt and officials, he
arrived at the  blanket factory in Insein.

 The factory manager briefed him on production, availability of raw materials
and distribution of  finished goods. The Minister was also briefed by
Managing Director of MTI U San Kyi.

 The minister and party inspected various production divisions of the
factory.

 At the garment factory, they looked into the requirements presented by
officials.

 The minister then called for boosting production, making innovations,
effective use of byproducts  and promoting employees' welfare programmes.

 The minister and party then inspected the production lines of the factory.

(9)   Prize distribution for outstanding performance in  education

YANGON, 22 Oct-Member of the Secretariat of the Union Solidarity and
Development  Association Minister for Rail Transportation U Win Sein this
morning addressed the fourth prize  distribution ceremony for outstanding
performance in academic field and all round at the Mandalay  Division USDA
Office in Aungmye Thazan Township.

 Also present were Patron of Mandalay Division USDA Chairman of Division Law
and Order  Restoration Council Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint, members of the
Division Law and Order  Restoration Council, Mayor of Mandalay Col Sein Win
Aung and division level department heads,  District and Township Law and
Order Restoration Council members, USDA members, teachers,  prize winner
students and parents.

(9)   Wives of military attaches present cash to Women's  Home
 
YANGON, 22 Oct-Wives of military attaches and senior Tatmadaw officers
presented cash to  Women's Home of Social Welfare Department on 113, Thanlwin
Road, this afternoon.

 Present were wives of military attaches and senior Tatmadaw officers, Deputy
Minister for Social  Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Maung Kyi,
Director-General of Social Welfare  Department U Than Po and departmental
officials.

 The wives of military attaches and senior Tatmadaw officers presented K
80,000 for Women's  Home and Child Care Unit (Htaukkyant) to Deputy Minister
Brig-Gen Maung Kyi.

 The deputy minister then presented certificate of honour to the donors.

 U Than Po explained undertakings of Women's Home. The wives of military
attaches and senior  Tatmadaw officers were conducted round the Women's Home.

(10)  Four members of KNU armed group exchange arms for  peace
 
YANGON, 22 Oct-Upholding Our Three Main National Causes, the State Law and
Order  Restoration Council or the Tatmadaw Government is building national
reconsolidation and striving  for the emergence of modern, developed and
peaceful nation by implementing the 12 political  economic and social
objectives. The armed groups, after realizing the genuine goodwill of the
 Government, renounced their destructive acts and exchanged their arms for
peace to come into the  boson of the people.

 Private Min Lwin Oo (3035) of guard platoon of No 7 battalion, No 3 brigade,
of KNU armed  group exchanged arms for peace at the intelligence unit in
Shwegyin on 9 October. He brought  along With him No 36 hand grenade and one
China hand grenade. L/cpl Myint Soe, privates Hla  Shwe and Zaw Win of Myint
Thein' s group of No 2 battalion, No 1 Brigade, KNU armed group  exchanged
their arms for peace while the Tatmadaw column was combing the area near
Laykay  Wintapa Village on 11 October. They brought along one carbine, one AK
47 automatic and one  M-79 automatic.

 Responsible personnel attended a warm welcome to them and provided necessary
assistance.

(11)  9.2 kilos of opium seized in Tachilek

YANGON. 22 Oct -Acting on a tip sent by the intelligence unit in the area,
police of Tachilek  Police Station lay in wait at the junction of Mongphon
Village on Maiyan road in Tachilek  Township at 10.30 pm on 13 October 1997.
On stopping Sai Naw and in the ensuing investigation  the police found six
packets of raw opium weighing, 9.2 kilos carried by him.

 Tachilek Police Station booked ,Sai Naw under Narcotic Drugs and
Psychotropic Substances  Law.
